Dr Indira Samarasekera

Biography

Dr. Indira Samarasekera was the 12th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Alberta. She holds a B.Sc. (in mechanical engineering) from the University of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), a M.Sc. (in mechanical engineering) from the University of California, as a Hayes Fulbright Scholar, and a Ph.D. (in metallurgical engineering) from the University of British Columbia.

She serves on the boards of Magna International, TC Energy, Stelco and Intact Financial and was on the Board of Bank of Nova Scotia for twelve years. Indira is member of the Royal Society of Canada, an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Engineering, the Tri-lateral Commission, and has received honorary degrees from the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, Université de Montréal, the University of Waterloo, Queen’s University, BCIT, the University of Alberta, the University of Western Ontario, and Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland.
